The Allans and South Gippsland - Under Construction

 Early History

South Gippsland, like Creswick, had the same early history as we saw in the Creswick district. However it did not have gold and was "settled" later. It had much the same challenges to development but only more daunting.

It's gullies were deeper, its trees taller and its scrubland more dense. In an excerpt from "The Land of the Lyrebird" it was said that there was little sign of the aborigines were here. It just wasn't somewhere they could adapt to.

The other contrast with Western Victoria is that South Gippsland was more fertile and had a greater rainfall.

One pioneer commented that "when it wasn't raining it was dripping on you from the trees", another said "you dont want to camp in they same place for too long or you will find a tree growing in your tent">

Location

"Inverlair" farm is located 8 miles from Leongatha on the "Mardan Road" that links that town with Mirboo North.

Leongatha is some 80 miles South-East of Melbourne but in the early days it was a much longer trip by train to Morwell and then by pack horse some 30 miles to the farm.

"Inverlair"

It was in 18?? that brothers Alexander & Richard Allan trekked to South Gippsland by the above mentioned route to make 2 selections within 2 miles of each other.
